Our Story

Nunzio’s Restaurant is a family-run Italian restaurant located in a heritage building on Essex Street in the heart of Fremantle.

The restaurant continues a hospitality story deeply connected to Fremantle’s Italian community and dining culture. Its founder, Nunzio Gumina, has been part of the city’s hospitality scene for more than five decades and is widely recognised for his contribution to Fremantle’s dining history.

In the late 1970s, while operating Papa Luigi’s on South Terrace, Nunzio became one of the pioneers of alfresco dining in Fremantle. What began with a request to place a few tables outside helped shape the outdoor café culture that would later become a defining feature of the Cappuccino Strip and the city itself.

Over the years, Nunzio remained closely connected to Fremantle’s hospitality community, building a reputation for warm service, generosity and a genuine passion for bringing people together around the table.

A new chapter began when Fabio Lorenzano and Eva Hoehne took over the restaurant in 2017. While honouring its history and character, they have brought their own vision to Nunzio’s, combining traditional Italian hospitality with a contemporary approach to Italian cuisine.

Today, Nunzio’s Restaurant continues to welcome locals and visitors alike with handmade pasta, fresh local seafood, carefully selected Italian wines and attentive service. It is a place where tradition and innovation meet, carrying forward a story that has been part of Fremantle for generations.

More than just an Italian restaurant, Nunzio’s is the continuation of a long-standing Fremantle hospitality story — one built on family, community, culture and a love of sharing good food.
